Motivating children to realize their potential
DTT is one of the structured ways in which skills are taught within ABA programs. Larger skills are broken down into sub-skills. Then a unit of teaching occurs and it looks like this:
1. A direction is given - either verbally or through the environment. This is referred to as the discriminative stimulus(SD).
2. Sometimes a prompt is given to teach the learner the skill. Behaviorists call this the prompting stimulus (SP).
3. The learner responds. Technically this is called the Response(R).
4. Reinforcement is then given to the learner for the correct response (Behavior Analysts would say that the "Reinforcement was provided following the learner's correct response" since we cannot reinforce a learner for their correct behavior). This is called the Reinforcing Stimulus (SR).
5. Lastly, a pause is given before the next trial begins. Behaviorists refer to this as an Inter-trial Interval (ITI).
