Motivating Children to Realize their Potential
Motivating children to realize their potential
The first goal of a verbal behavior program is to provide the learner with an effective way to ask for what he wants, this is called requesting or manding. Teaching manding first has many benefits: it prevents maladaptive behaviors from forming, gives the learner control over his environment, and most importantly, creates frequent opportunities for the learner to access reinforcement.
Increasing Language for Children with Autism outlines how to get a learner manding hundreds of times per day. The presentation highlights the following essential strategies: pairing, motivation, shaping, and intraverbals. While the goal is to have all learners use spoken language, some learners will need to begin with an alternative functional communication system. We review the options and the pros and cons to each system.
