IDENTIFY THE SIGNS OF A COMMUNICATION DISORDER

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month. Early detection of communication difficulties can improve response to treatment and quality of life. Learn how to identify those signs in infants and toddlers.

Children: Signs of a Language Disorder
• Does not smile or interact with others (birth+)
• Does not babble [engage in baby talk] (4-7 months)
• Produces few sounds or gestures (7-12 months)
• Does not understand routine commands (7 months-2 years)
• Says 5 – 25 words (12-18 months)
• Words are not easily understood (18 months-2 years)
• Does not put words together to make simple sentences (1.5-3 years)
• Difficulty playing and talking with other children (2-3 years)
