Motivating children to realize their potential

Where to Start: My Child is Struggling with Speech

Better Hearing and Speech Month Continues. In our last post, you have learned to identify the signs of a communication problem, but what’s next? For children with limited, to absent, communication abilities we want to do the following:

• Use shorter sentences or phrases
• Avoid teaching:
– Letters
– Numbers
– Colors

Why? Your child will never need to ask you for a 3, Blue, or X.

• Label important beginning words by teaching:
– Clothing
– Foods
– Toys
– Animals

See you next post to discuss: “What sounds should my child be able to say?”
