Clinical Considerations When Working With an Older Population

Presented by Manuel Ramirez, MA, BCBA

February 8th | 10:30 AM -12:30 PM

Love 2 Learn Consulting, Suite 150

Although a vast majority of the research conducted within Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)  is heavily focused on children, it can be used across an individual’s lifespan. As children begin to approach their teens and eventually transition into adulthood a clinician should be actively thinking “What skills can I introduce to best facilitate an independent life style.” By beginning to consider how one can work with an aging population at the onset of services, life skills could be taught at an earlier stage in ones life. The older a person becomes and the less a skill is not worked on the more the person will become dependent on others to exist. As clinicians we must aid in establishing not just existence in ones surroundings but living a meaningful life, we should be looking at what is important for an individual to have a life, for example having a job, living on their own with minimal assistance, cooking for themselves, etc. An adult that has a diagnoses of autism and/or comorbidity should not be passed aside. Clinician need to consider the clinical needs of its aging population.

About the Speaker:

After graduating with his bachelors in Psychology in 2012, Manny Ramirez decided he wanted to pursue his passion of helping children and teens aged 2- 18 with autism realize their true potential. He started Teen social skills groups and created the curriculum that guided the groups, collaborated with his team to establish clinical review protocols, and established language for many clients.

In 2015, he found himself in a new position where he was not only helping children with autism, but also adults with an intellectual disability and mental illness  who resided in a residential home (level 4A-4I or specialized residential facilities that at times had a delayed egress) due to their severe behaviors. Within this role he began to understand that he not only wanted to assist children that needed help with their lives but also help all age groups across their lifespan. The age range for the residential clients ranged from 10 – 85.  Most of his assessment experience and collaboration with many different BCBA’s, other fields made him much more well rounded to determine age based skill sets for individuals he served, and allowed him to have an understanding of how Applied Behavior Analysis could be used with adults that have challenges.

After assisting residential homes by consulting on behavioral principles, he came across another new opportunity where he operated his own program known as an Enhanced Behavioral Support Home (EBSH). Manny oversaw the administration and behavioral implementation of the entire program, while still consulting with other residential programs. Here he had the opportunity to collaborate with higher executives within the regional centers to examine the needs of the EBSH model and the type of individuals that were going to live in the homes where the program resided. Manny collaborated on the creation of the program design of the home and embedded a base of behavioral principles throughout.

After feeling like he wanted to get back in touch with helping children, he decided to take an opportunity working with Love 2 Learn Consulting as a Regional Director. As a BCBA, Manny provides services with the utmost care and creates an environment that fosters growth and accountability, and more importantly, establishes a relationship that fosters learning.
